New Virtual School Opens for Ohio Students

Students throughout Ohio now have the option to enroll in a new K-12 virtual school, Steubenville Cyber Academy (SCA).

SCA uses the Lincoln Interactive curriculum, which offers more than 250 core and elective courses, including five languages and the STEM-focused science program Cutting Edge Science. SCA students in the Steubenville area will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of on-campus programs.

"SCA students will have the option to take classes online but also face-to-face, particularly at the high school level," said Charles Kokiko, director of curriculum for Steubenville City Schools, in a prepared statement. "High school students will also have the option to earn college credit by taking classes offered through Franciscan University, and for that they would be required to take their classes on site."

Unlike many other virtual learning programs, SCA students will also be able to participate in on-campus extracurricular activities at all grade levels, such as band, choir, school plays, and athletic programs.

"The difference between enrolling in Steubenville Cyber Academy and another online learning program offered in Ohio is that our students can do all the extras: the clubs, the sports, and all the activities offered by Steubenville schools," added Kokiko.

Steubenville City Schools made the decision to develop the new virtual program to offer its students a more flexible learning environment and also to bring back students who had left the district's schools for other virtual programs.

"We have been losing students to online schools for some time, so we are hoping this new program will bring those students back," said Kokiko.

Enrollment in Steubenville Cyber Academy is now open to all Ohio students in kindergarten through grade 12, and the district will provide students with the technology they need to participate in the program.

Steubenville City Schools in eastern Ohio serves more than 2,200 students at one high school, one middle school, and four elementary schools, as well as Steubenville Cyber Academy.
