Sophia Shows Teachers How to Flip the Classroom
Teachers can learn how to "flip" their classrooms and earn a professional development certificate—for free—this summer with Sophia.org. The online social education platform has partnered with Capella University to offer a series of tutorials on flipping the classroom.
Sophia first introduced the Flipped Classroom Certificate in April of this year. Teachers earn the certificate by completing a set of tutorials on a range of topics including "What is the Flipped Classroom?", "Differentiation Via the Flipped Class", and "Technology and Resources." The tutorial series takes roughly two to four hours to complete, according to a statement issued by Sophia. Capella is endorsing the program. The online school's education faculty worked with Sophia to create the material for this program.
Sophia also offers free webinars on the flipped classroom. The online events feature educators who are successfully employing the model in their schools. The next webinar, scheduled for August 14 at 7 p.m. EDT, will feature California high school math teacher Crystal Kirch.
The flipped classroom is a twist on the traditional class structure. In this model, teachers assign tutorials for homework and then use class time to review the material, have students complete assignments, and work with students that need individual help. The model has become increasingly popular because it allows teachers to make more efficient use of class time.
