Starboard Adds 3 New Hybrid Storage Systems to Product Lineup

Starboard Storage Systems has launched an updated version of the Starboard operating system, Starboard OS 3.2, as well as three new hybrid storage systems: Starboard AC2000, AC4000, and AC4500.

Starboard designed the new systems in the AC-series to help midsize enterprises address their data storage consolidation challenges, and the systems feature CacheControl, "which delivers up to eight times better SSD read cache efficiency than traditional storage using flash as a cache," according to a news release from the company.

The AC2000 is targeted at more "budget-conscious environments," according to the company, and has a starting price under $30,000. It features storage consolidation, solid-state performance, and scalability up to 171 terabytes (TB). Starboard claims it's ideal for boosting the performance of Microsoft applications, virtualization, and file sharing, and that it's well suited for remote or data protection sites.

The AC4000 is the "preferred choice for midsize enterprises looking to consolidate their storage," according to the company. It's scalable up to 576 TB.

The AC4500 is the flagship product of the AC-series. It supports up to four write caches, has 12.8 TB of effective read cache (with 2:1 compression), and scales up to more than half a petabyte of storage. According to the company, it "eliminates the management complexity of RAID groups" and supports fiber channel, iSCSI, CIFS, and NFS workload management on a single platform.

Key features of Starboard OS 3.2 include:

  • Plug-and-play SSD performance scaling;
  • Multiple write cache accelerators;
  • Inline cache compression;
  • Dynamic storage pooling; and
  • Suite of all-inclusive enterprise features.

"Starboard’s installed storage systems manage more than three petabytes of NAS and SAN, and use up to 90 percent less drives than traditional storage solutions," said Lee Johns, VP of product management for Starboard Storage Systems, in a prepared statement. "When it comes to hybrid storage, cache efficiency drives the value, and by virtualizing independent read and write cache across the maximum possible workloads, these new platforms deliver on the promise of hybrid storage with plug-and-play simplicity."
