Pennsylvania Districts Add Online Speech Therapy
The Capital Area Intermediate Unit (IU), a regional education agency serving 24 districts in south central Pennsylvania, has adopted a new program that allows it to offer online speech therapy services to its districts. The agency works with districts in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and northern York counties.
Capital Area IU has contracted with PresenceLearning, a provider of online therapy and other special needs-related services for K-12 schools. The service enables students with special needs to participate in online therapy sessions with licensed speech-language pathologists. Approximately 60 students are taking part in the program, according to a prepared statement.
Districts looking to access the service must first register their students with the Capital Area IU. Students can be registered as a group, at the start of the school year, or on an individual basis, during the school year, as needed. The program also includes "speech-language pathology assessments (initial, triennial and dismissal) online as well as write Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and manage student cases."
