Sylvan Learning Launches SylvanPlay Mobile Games Network

Sylvan Learning has launched SylvanPlay, a network of educational games for children in grades 1 through 4. The games are available for iOS and Android mobile devices.

SylvanPlay currently offers nine games and plans to add more on an ongoing basis, including the addition of games for students in grade 5 and 6. According to the company, the games are designed to help students improve their reading, math, science, geography, strategic thinking and other skills.

Games currently available on SylvanPlay include:

  • Critter Cruise, a math and language learning game that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards;
  • Battle Station, a game designed to help kids improve their number sense;
  • Angle Asteroids, designed to help kids develop an intuition for angles;
  • Pizza Party, for learning fractions;
  • Equator, which lets kids practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and order of operations;
  • Sushi Scramble, a multi-player word-building game for two to four players that can be played collaboratively or competitively;
  • Not Lost in the Universe, which teaches kids how wind, sun, water and heat serve as energy sources;
  • Get Rocky, a geology-based racing game; and
  • Wonder Bunny Math Race, which is designed to help children learn numbers, counting, addition and subtraction.

The games are all designed for kids ages 6 to 9, except Wonder Bunny Math Race, which is designed for kids ages 3 to 8. Most of the games can run on any iOS or Android device, but some of them are designed specifically for use on tablets.

SylvanPlay is not the company's first venture into the mobile market. The company has already established its SylvanSync platform to move its curriculum to the iPad.

"Sylvan continues to follow what families are doing and adapting the curriculum to the devices they prefer," said Julia Fitzgerald, chief marketing officer for Sylvan Learning, in a prepared statement. "Why make parents say 'no' to apps and games if we can turn them into educational tools that help their child succeed?"

The SylvanPlay games are available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Prices range from free to $4.99, and all of the apps are free for Sylvan Learning customers. Further information can be found on the SylvanPlay site.
