Arizona District Creates Data Warehouse for Better Data Analysis

Arizona’s Kyrene Elementary School District, near Phoenix, is implementing a data warehouse solution for data management, analytics, and reports to help consolidate and process information from the SIS and various other district systems.

The data warehouse is being developed in partnership with DecisionEd, a company that makes data consolidating and analytics tools for school districts and other markets. Using the IBM Cognos platform, the warehouse combines disparate databases--such as the SIS, human resources/finance systems, and student assessment systems--and provides reports and data dashboards for use by district staff.

According to the district, the goal is to help staff better understand important metrics and ultimately to make more informed decisions that lead to improved graduation rates.

"Our staff takes pride in putting data in the hands of teachers and administrators so that they may make informed decisions to guide instruction and learning," said Mark Share, director of curriculum and learning services for the district in a statement. "Once we isolate the variables and put programs in place to address the needs and concerns, the DecisionEd Data Warehouse will then help us to monitor the effectiveness of our actions."
