Florida Virtual School Switches to D2L's Brightspace LMS

The largest online public school district in the United States is moving to a new learning management system (LMS).

The Florida Virtual School (FLVS), which had 400,000 enrolled students last year, will begin transitioning immediately to D2L's Brightspace LMS. The decision was made as the result of a detailed selection process. Company and district representatives pointed out several features the new system will offer the district.

The platform incorporates personalized learning, meaning teachers will have greater flexibility in creating their lessons and giving student more personal experiences. They expect it to offer a clean, responsive user experience and to integrate easily with social media, chat and video features. The new Brightspace Daylight experience is accessible on almost every smartphone, tablet or browser-enabled device. Finally, it includes real-time learning analytics tools that will give teachers immediate data to improve student outcomes.

"Today, students have more advanced needs than ever before, and techniques like game-based learning, personalized learning, real-time analytics and social learning have become essential," said FLVS President and CEO Ronald Blocker. "Brightspace is designed to improve student achievement, a critical metric for FLVS."

D2L CEO John Baker said, "FLVS is an online learning pioneer and their leadership on the student experience is an inspiration to all of us at D2L. We look forward to building on that success with a great partnership and delivering outstanding student outcomes with personalized learning."

Established in 1997, FLVS offers more than 150 courses to students in grades K-12.
