15 High School Teams Awarded $10K for Inventions
A program that celebrates outstanding inventions and encourages high school students to pursue creative lives and careers has selected 15 teams to receive a $10,000 grant for their inventions.
The Lemelson-MIT Program, founded in 1994, is funded by the Oregon-based Lemelson Foundation and administered by faculty and experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s School of Engineering.
This year’s InvenTeams comprise students, teachers and community members from across 13 states. Projects address real-world health, environmental and safety problems, including:
- A system that provides temporary shelter for people who are homeless;
- A device that senses pets and children in the backseats of cars; and
- A robotic device that monitors temperatures and helps prevent heat stress for young chickens.
Additional descriptions for each of the inventions are available on the Lemelson-MIT site. The 15 teams will showcase their projects at the program’s EurekaFest in June 2017.
Applications for the 2017-2018 school year are now open.
