High School Skilled-Trades Teachers Invited to Apply for $1.25M in Prizes

Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Programs to Recognize 20 Outstanding Skilled Trades Teachers and Programs

The Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence awards $1.25 million to 20 outstanding skilled trades teachers and programs in U.S. public high schools.

Five grand prize winners will be awarded $100,000 each, and 15 additional prize winners will receive $50,000 each, according to a news release.

The competition is open to public high school skilled-trades teachers in the United States teaching such topics as agricultural mechanics, carpentry, construction, electrical, HVAC, manufacturing, plumbing, transportation mechanics, welding, or other skilled trades.

Applications for Round 1 are due by 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Friday, May 20, 2022; the Round 2 application deadline for selected finalists will be 5 p.m. Pacific on Friday, July 15. Finalists will be announced on Monday, June 27, 2022, and prize winners will be announced in October 2022.

Judges will look for the following when selecting winners, according to the Tools for Schools website:

  • Strong evidence of past teaching success and future innovation
  • Thoughtful and in-depth application
  • Positive data and results
  • Inspirational storytelling
  • Active engagement with learning modules
  • Passion, creativity, and leadership
