Paper Acquires MajorClarity, Part of Plans for Comprehensive 'Educational Support System' Platform

Digital tutoring provider Paper has acquired MajorClarity, a career and college readiness platform, and integrated its CCR functions into its expanded platform as part of its plan to transform Paper into a comprehensive “Educational Support System” solution for K–12 schools, Paper said.

In a new blog post, Paper co-founder and CEO Philip Cutler said Paper’s early focus on tutoring “was only meant to be the first step to building a complete Educational Support System. Our purpose has always been much more expansive.”

Phase 2 of Paper’s long-term plan began last year with the acquisition of MajorClarity and the integration of MajorClarity’s CCR tools into Paper’s “rapidly expanding” platform, Cutler said. “This acquisition accelerated and expanded our ability to help students prepare for life after school, and it creates a CCR Learner Profile that draws on the insights from our existing CCR offerings, as well as our support and practice tools,” he wrote in the blog post. “The integrated CCR platform provides academic advising for all learners — whether they intend to pursue a technical certification, a college degree, an internship or apprenticeship, join the military, or move directly into the workforce. It also includes customized academic pathways, college application management, and workforce micro-credentialing.”

Paper’s announcement cited a Gallup survey showing that nearly half, or 45%, of U.S. parents want more post-secondary paths besides the four-year college degree for their high school students. About two-thirds of parents reported that their student faces barriers to finding the best pathway for them following graduation, citing barriers such as “a lack of finances, information or availability, as well as more systemic challenges, including the preparation provided by their child's school.”

The new CCR tools integrated with Paper’s platform include “customized academic pathways, career exploration tools, workforce micro-credentialing, a resume builder, and a cover letter review tool,” according to a news release. “For students attending college, there is a college essay review tool, a college application management, and a scholarship search.”

The launch of MajorClarity by Paper follows an announcement earlier this month that Paper had launched a new suite of instructional and learning tools addressing math skills, literacy, and after-school programming. Those solutions, the new CCR tools, and Paper’s original on-demand virtual tutoring and writing review services are available now to the 3 million U.S. students already using the platform, Paper said.

Cutler said the Paper ESS platform “is now organized into learning tools for support, practice, and career and college readiness, all intended to create better opportunities for students.
