NSTA, Northrop Grumman Launch Third Round of Teacher STEM Academy

Northrop Grumman is now accepting applications for the third year of its STEM program for teachers, the Northrop Grumman Foundation Teachers Academy.

Administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the academy is designed to help improve the confidence of teachers with students in grades 5-8 as they science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics.

This year, the academy will select 27 teachers to participate as "teacher fellows." Activities the fellows will participate in include:

• The NSTA's National Conference on Science Education;
• A five-day workshop to discuss strategies for integrating effective and authentic engineering design practice into the classroom, held at a Northrop Grumman facility in Los Angeles  next summer;
• An 80-hour externship at a Northrop Grumman facility in which they'll be paired with an engineer or technologist to see workforce skills in action;
• Lesson and unit development built around externship experiences;
• Tool and resource development for sharing with colleagues to build capacity for technology and engineering instruction in their home schools and districts;
• An NSTA membership package; and
• Access to an online learning community designed specifically for them.

"By participating in this unique fellowship opportunity, teachers receive the tools and resources needed so that they can return to the classroom with renewed energy and creative ideas that spur powerful student learning."
