ISTE and LEAP Deliver Online Course in Personalized Learning

Starting next week, a new course on personalized learning will officially kick off on the new ISTE U professional learning website. ISTE U is a global education initiative from the International Society for Technology in Education.

The newest course was co-developed with LEAP Innovations, a national organization based in Chicago that works with schools to implement personalized learning. LEAP created the LEAP Learning Framework, a set of resources to help educators "define, design and implement" their personalized learning models.

"Personalized Learning" is a 30-hour online course for K-12 educators that runs from Sept. 24 to Nov. 16, 2018. The cost is $261 for ISTE members and $349 for non-members.

This introductory course uses personalized learning itself by helping participants learn the framework components through a combination of "knowledge building activities," case studies and examples, video demonstrations, reflective writing, and optional and required weekly coaching sessions with office hours.

The course also gives students an option to earn graduate-level credits with an additional fee through the professional development program at Dominican University of California.

The main instructor is Albert Bertani, who serves as a senior advisor to LEAP. He also works with the Urban Education Institute at the University of Chicago and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in San Francisco. However, four other faculty -- from DePaul University, Arizona State, the University of Iowa and Stanford U -- are also included in the training.
