Fast ForWord Implemented in Florida Schools

12.05.2006—Scientific Learning Corp. (SLC), Oakland, Calif., today announced that its Fast ForWord literacy products have been adopted in several schools in the Duval County Public Schools system in Jacksonville, Fla. Fast ForWord is a family of digital learning tools designed to develop "the neurocognitive skills required to read and learn effectively." It's targeted toward students who are characterized as "struggling learners."

As part of the implementation, the district has expanded its use of Fast ForWord to 33 elementary, middle and high schools.

"We have been extremely impressed with the Fast ForWord products following implementation; the results to date are significant, and in addition to academic gains, we are seeing notable improvements in classroom performance and attendance," said Joseph Wise, superintendent of Duval County Public Schools, in a prepared statement. "We are committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities and interventions that will inspire our students, and we believe that Fast ForWord is and will continue to be an important part of these offerings."

Fast ForWord is being used to improve what Scientific Learning Corp. describes as "the four essential cognitive skills critical for learning: memory, attention, speech processing and sequencing."

The district is also using Fast ForWord for students who are English-language learners (ELL) and students who are receiving district educational services within Department of Juvenile Justice facilities, according to SLC.

Duval County Public Schools, 19th-largest school district in the United States, includes 165 schools and alternative learning centers with some 130,000 students.
