Hayward 'e-District' Adds Xerox Document Management

12.05.2006—Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) in California has entered into a five-year deal with Xerox to support its "e-District" online learning center. The "multi-million-dollar" deal includes the implementation of more than 60 Xerox WorkCentre multifunction systems and Xerox DocuShare enterprise content management software.

The e-District in Hayward includes a Web portal and wireless network serving the entire city. It's designed for learning and assessment for students, and it provides professional development materials for staff. Teachers in the district use the portal's interactive whiteboard to create lessons with multimedia elements. The integration of Xerox' DocuShare software adds in the ability for teachers to save and share documents and multimedia files, as well as curricula.

Hayward has also outfitted its print centers with Xerox DocuColor 250 color copier-printer and the Xerox 4110 production system. Materials from the portal can be sent to the print center, and the district is currently using this capability for printing student materials, report cards, calendars, newsletters and mailers, according to Xerox.

"Xerox presented itself as a true partner to our IT staff and proved that it understood not only our infrastructure but also our vision for a high-tech learning center," said Patrick J. Simon, chief information officer, Hayward Unified School District, in a prepared statement. "It delivered a solution that works seamlessly with our other technology investments—a key factor in the success of our e-District portal."

In addition, Hayward is also using its Xerox WorkCentre systems to convert all hard-copy documents from 1950 on to digital formats to be stored in a Xerox DocuShare online repository.
