Idaho District Improves Reading Achievement with Intervention Program

01.04.2007—According to Oakland, Calif.-based Scientific Learning Corp. (SLC), the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 in Idaho has improved reading achievement drastically with the use of Fast ForWord in an intervention program. According to a study of students in that district, the number of students who achieved a reading performance level of "proficient" more than doubled after using Fast ForWord products.

SLC reported that after using the company's Fast ForWord software intervention, 65 percent of the students in Pocatello/Chubbuck 25 attained a reading performance level of proficient or higher, compared with the previous level of 31 percent. According to the district's study, students also increased their average reading grade-equivalent by 17 months over a period of four months.

Study participants included 282 third- through 10th-grade students in eight schools in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 in the 2005-2006 school year. According to SLC, "most were evaluated with the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) before and after Fast ForWord participation; others were assessed with the Woodcock-McGrew-Werder Mini-Battery of Achievement (MBA)."

The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 is a K-12 district with 23 schools serving about 12,000 students in Idaho.
