Event: A Debate on School Reform

01.12.2007—The Hoover Institution’s Koret Task Force on K-12 Education will host a debate Jan. 18 entitled, "A Debate on School Reform: Curriculum and Instruction or Markets and Choice?" The debate will take place between four education policy scholars on the following resolution: "Resolved, true school reform demands more attention to
curriculum and instruction than to markets and choice."

Participants in the debate are all members of the Koret Task Force on K-12 Education and include:

  • Diane Ravitch, research professor at New York University and former assistant secretary of education and counselor to Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander (1991 to 1993);
  • E. D. Hirsch Jr., professor emeritus of education and humanities at the University of Virginia and author of several books on education issue;
  • Caroline M. Hoxby, Allie S. Freed Professor of Economics at Harvard University and director of the Economics of Education Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research; and
  • Paul E. Peterson, Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Government and director of the Program on Education Policy and Governance at Harvard University.

Chester E. Finn Jr., chairman of the Koret Task Force on K-12 Education and president and trustee of the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, will moderate the debate.

The event will be held Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Stauffer Auditorium, Hoover Institution, Stanford University.
