Georgia District Gets Emergency Notification System

3/7/2007—Ware County School System has contracted with Honeywell to deploy the company's Instant Alert for Schools (IAS).
IAS is a Web-based system that provides notifications to parents of students in the event of emergencies. It's also used to distribute school news. As part of the deal, Honeywell will also deploy its Digital Video Manager (DVM) surveillance system.
"In today's sensitive security environment, we have to be more prepared around safety and security issues," said Joseph Barrow, superintendent of the Ware County School System, in a prepared statement. "Honeywell was a perfect choice because its technology gives the district a proven method to inform our parents and staff, and we had a previous relationship with the company."
Instant Alert for Schools broadcasts messages to phones, cell phones, pagers, e-mail accounts, and PDAs once an alert is initiated by a district representative via the Internet or phone. Parents can update their contact information online and specify how they prefer to be reached.
As part of the contract with the district, Honeywell also will install a CCTV system and cameras in two middle schools using Honeywell's DVM and Enterprise Buildings Integrator technologies. The Enterprise Buildings Integrator is also used to monitor heating, ventilation, and air conditioning components from a single point, with the aim of reducing energy costs.
Ware County School System serves about 6,500 students in the Waycross, GA area. The district sometimes is used as a receiving ground for evacuees during hurricane warnings through an agreement with the Georgia Emergency Management Association.
