Arizona DOE Links with Lexile Framework

3/21/2007—The Arizona Department of Education has inked a deal with MetaMetrics to link the state's "Instrument to Measure Standards" (AIMS) to the Lexile Framework for Reading. The agreement will impact about 500,000 students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 beginning in the 2007/2008 school year.

The Lexile Framework matches reading ability and text difficulty to allow educators to assign reading materials that will foster growth and monitor progress.

"Our 2007 statewide initiatives are focused on advancing education excellence for Arizona students," said Tom Horne, state superintendent of public instruction, in a prepared statement. "Adding Lexiles to our assessments gives our state's educators, parents, and students an actionable tool for meeting our goal of ensuring that all Arizona students are prepared for the demands of life in the 21st century."

In Arizona, third- through eighth-graders take the AIMS Dual Purpose Assessment test, while students in 10th grade take the AIMS High School exam, both of which, through the agreement, will be linked to the Lexile Framework for Reading to help improve performance in the reading portions of the exams.

In related news, the 2007 Lexile National Reading Conference will be held June 18 through 20 at the Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL. Registration runs $299 per person through March 31, $399 thereafter.
