The Pennsylvania Department of Education has received a five-year grant totaling about $6.4 million to help fund training and retention efforts for teachers and staff supporting special education.

Through the grant, which came from the United States Department of Education's Office for Special Education Programs, Pennsylvania will receive about $1.39 million annually, funds that will be used for a professional development initiative called "Improving Student Results: A Focus on Highly Qualified Special Education Personnel."

The program will target teachers and support staff who work with students who have disabilities

"Pennsylvania's strategic focus on professional development recognizes that every child is unique and that all school personnel, not just teachers, play a role in helping each student reach his or her full potential," said Pennsylvania's education secretary, Gerald L. Zahorchak.

According to the department, about 90 percent of the money will be used to fund professional development efforts. The remainder will be used to update the state's Special Education Certificate process in order to "improve the knowledge, skills, and retention rates of new special education teachers."
