Tucson USD Gives SmartMusic Subscriptions to Students

Tucson Unified School District in Arizona has signed on with MakeMusic to deliver the company's SmartMusic solution to 3,000 of its students. The move is part of the Opening Minds Through the Arts project, initiated in Tucson USD in 2001.
Opening Minds Through the Arts is a program designed to bring arts, including music, into other disciplines, such as reading, writing, math, and science. It began as a pilot program in Tucson USD at three elementary schools and has since grown to 35 elementary and two middle schools and is being introduced in other Arizona school districts as well. The initiative has reportedly been proved to improve test scores and teacher effectiveness within the district.
SmartMusic is an interactive music practice system that includes accompaniments, exercises, and recording/burning functionality for students to archive and listen to their own work. Designed for woodwinds, brass, strings, and vocals, the system includes accompaniments for some 30,000 compositions and provides feedback on student performance as they play along. The system also allows educators to guide student practice and provides tools for assignments and grading.
