GlobalScholar.com, a developer of education-focused Web resources, announced late last week that it's secured $27 million in funding and that it's now in a deal to acquire Excelsior Software, a developer of K-12 assessment management solutions.

GlobalScholar.com provides a range of education services, from those targeted specifically toward education--such as its GlobalScholar service for educators to manage content and curricula--to student and parent resources, including online tutoring and various search services aimed at helping students find schools to attend. The company said in a statement released Thursday that it decided to acquire Excelsior "in order to offer Excelsior's many loyal customers an even broader collection of educational services."

Excelsior, which serves about 1,000 districts in the United States, provides technologies for managing assessments and tracking and reporting student progress.

"For more than 20 years, we've been dedicated to education innovation, and along the way have helped millions of students, parents, teachers and administrators collect, analyze and act on the information they need to improve student performance," said William Zaggle, president and CEO of Excelsior Software, in a prepared statement. "Our integration with GlobalScholar.com will take our effort to a whole new level. Now, as part of the GlobalScholar.com team, and a member of the Knowledge Universe family, we have access to the resources that will allow us to have an even greater impact on raising student achievement."

GlobalScholar.com has also recently secured $27 million in round B funding, according to the company.

"The additional funding, the wealth of education experience the Excelsior Software team brings, and the integration of our products, will allow us to provide the tools students, parents and educators need to confidently improve student outcomes," said said Kal Raman, CEO of GlobalScholar.com.
