Kewanee District Adopts Disaster Recovery for Mixed Computing Environment

Kewanee Community Unit School District 229 in Illinois has adopted a new disaster recovery system for its students' computers. Kewanee chose Drive Vaccine from Horizon DataSys, a special version of the company's flagship Rollback Rx Pro disaster recovery suite tailored for education.

The district's network is a mixed computing environment, comprising some 700 Mac and Windows systems, managed by a two-person IT staff. So ease of use was essential in the selection of the disaster recovery system, according to the district.

"I am glad we chose Drive Vaccine; it is fast and very reliable. Its ease of use and flexibility are also very impressive, and they have been very important to us from the beginning," said Mike Perva, IT director for the district, in a statement released Wednesday. "We have now a great disaster recovery tool for our workstations, and all it requires is a simple reboot to restore the system to its initial state. It saves me time and also money that I would have spent on fixing or replacing computers. Also, we are looking forward to managing multiple campuses from a single location with the new Remote Management Console feature, which I anticipate using in the near future."

Drive Vaccine rolls back computer systems to a pre-configured baseline setting when users log off or when a computer restarts to prevent data loss and limit the impact of accidents and malicious activities on the machines without the intervention of IT. This includes "erasing files, installing software, and even modifying registry settings," according to Horizon DataSys.

Kewanee serves approximately 1,800 students in five schools--one high school, a combo elementary/junior high school, and three elementary and preK schools.
