$2 Million Samsung Classroom Grant Program Opens

Samsung has opened its 2013 Solve for Tomorrow grant program, which will award a total of $2 million in classroom technology for teachers. More than 300 winners and finalists will receive prizes.

The contest called on public school teachers and their students to propose ways to improve their communities through the use of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The contest has historically focused on the environment, but this year other types of community-oriented improvement proposals will be considered. The proposals should explain how the project will boost student interest in STEM, describe how students will be involved in the project, and demonstrate "the school's and students' need for technology."

Five winners will receive prize packages totaling $146,000 and will be able to attend an award ceremony in the nation's capital. A special "Environmental Innovation Award,"valued at $50,000, will also be presented to one winner by the National Environmental Education Foundation. Other prizes include:

  • A $30,000 technology package for 15 national finalists;
  • A $20,000 technology package for 51 state winners; and
  • Two Samsung tablets or 255 state finalists.

Prizes are being supplied by Samsung and some of its partners, including DirecTV and Adobe. To date, Samsung has awarded some $13 million to public schools in the United States.

Entries are due by Oct. 31.
