Dremel Rolling Out Next-Generation PLA 3D Printer for Education

Dremel 3D40

Dremel today unveiled the Idea Builder 3D40, the latest update to its line of 3D printers. The new model will be available in two versions — a standard retail configuration and a bundle designed specifically for education.

The single-extruder, PLA-based 3D40 adds several enhancements over previous Dremel 3D printers, including:

  • WiFi and Ethernet network printing (in addition to USB printing);
  • A larger build plate (10" x 6", supporting a build height of 6.7", with a layer thickness of as little as 0.1 mm);
  • Active filament monitoring;
  • Assisted print bed leveling; and
  • A "maintenance-free" extruder, according to Dremel.

The education edition also includes:

  • Curriculum;
  • Professional development;
  • One-on-one customer support;
  • Two build plates;
  • A USB drive with curriculum-supporting models;
  • Extra build plate tape; and
  • Four spools of multi-colored PLA filament. (PLA is a popular plastic filament for 3D printers. It's seen by some as an environmentally friendly plastic, as it's made of biomaterial and can be composted under the right conditions, generally at temperatures back-yard composters can't achieve but that commercial composters can. The 3D40 supports only Dremel-branded 1.75 mm PLA.)

The Idea Builder 3D40 supports Print Builder software on OS X and Windows and will support Android and iOS when Dremel's new apps launch in May, prior to the 3D40's anticipated ship date.

It will be available in June, but preorders are available now for the retail edition on Amazon. Further details about the EDU edition, including complete specs, can be found on Dremel's site.
