Chicago District Rolls Out Differentiated Math Instruction to 44 Schools

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is ramping up its implementation of Carnegie Learning's Cognitive Tutor, a research-based multimedia math curriculum. Through a deal announced this week, the district will provide the system to 25 high schools and 19 middle schools. Cognitive Tutor had previously been used in eight CPS schools.

The expanded deployment is part of the district's High School Transformation project, which launched back in 2006 with $21 million in funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The deployment includes Bridge to Algebra and Algebra I and Carnegie Learning's Geometry and Algebra II curricula for some high schools, as well as the Algebra I curriculum for some middle schools.

Cognitive Tutor programs include a mix of software, textbooks, professional development, and other resources. For the CPS deployment, 68 teachers will receive training through Carnegie Learning Professional Development services. Training is expected to begin by the start of the 2008-09 school year.

Chicago Public Schools is the third-largest school district in the United States with 600 schools serving about 435,000 students.
