The Best Education Apps at FETC

Mobile learning was a cornerstone of the FETC conference in Orlando last month, and the buzz culminated with the conference's closing session: An App Shootout where ed-tech pros Gail Lovely, Hall Davidson, and Jenna Linskens shared some of their favorite apps for Apple devices.

Start finding education apps by browsing the selection below, then try searching on your own, suggests Linskens, an assistant professor in education technology at Marian University in Wisconsin. To find the most relevant apps, she suggests searching the term "school" instead of "education." "It will give you 3,000 apps, but it will give you a cleaner list," she says.

Linskens also recommends browsing the iTunes store's top apps. "When you go into the app store, the page is broken up into the top three and the top eight education apps," she says. "Filter those out and then look at those to see what other people are currently purchasing."

For more information, see the complete list of apps shared at the shootout at its wiki page.

I recommend the new eNotebook app for the iPad. It lets me bring in DOC, PPT, and PDF files and write on them instantly with no file conversion! I can also open blank pages and keep a digital notebook. Definitely keeps me more organized.

I also wanted to mention BrainPop. I teach children with varying disabilities, and BrainPop is one of their most favorite apps! Being a teacher I am always looking for a great app that is free and easy for my students to access. Tim and Moby offer fantastic educational lessons in 5 minutes or less. For my non-verbal or low verbal students BrainPop offers great language building and vocabulary skills. For my higher level learners the end quiz is a great way for me to gauge their learning. I love BrainPop and all that it offers. It is a great way for me to differentiate my instruction in various areas!

Another great one is BrainPOP’s Featured Movie app. It enables mobile access to BrainPOP's full collection of more than 750 standards-aligned movies and quizzes. Kids can explore Science, Math, Social Studies, English, Engineering & Tech, Arts & Music, and Health subjects right on their mobile devices. The app now offers not only the free daily Featured Movie, but also two choices for subscribing to additional content.  The Explorer level complements the free daily topic with four additional related movies and quizzes that also rotate each day. This level is perfect for informal, exploratory learning at home or on the go ($1.99/month).  The Full Access level provides unlimited access to all BrainPOP movies and quizzes, letting kids focus on the subjects they're most interested in as well as what they're learning at school ($6.99/month).  BrainPOP site subscribers will be able to log in from the app at no additional cost.

You should check out neu.Annotate+, which just got a big update and is on sale for 99 cents right now. It's like notability, without the ability to record audio, but has features like cutting and pasting objects, grouping/ungrouping objects, aligning objects, being able to preview pdfs in icon format, and everything you draw or right is in vector format, which you can adjust after the penstroke.

I'd also like to add our history app LineTime - it's a smoothly zoomable timeline of the last 2000 years of world history, taken from Wikipedia data as well as the Library of Congress and FindingDulcinea. It costs $2.99, but we offer Apple's 50% educational discount for educational institutions. http://linetimeapp.com
