BOCES Adopts New Streaming Media Service

A board of cooperative educational services (BOCES) program in upstate New York has deployed a streaming video platform to provide supplementary lesson material.

Onedia-Herkimer-Madison BOCES has selected CCC! Streaming Media by New Dimension Media, which provides a variety of multimedia resources for the classroom. Subjects include social studies, sciences, mathematics, English and language arts, music, dance, art, and foreign language.

Types of available material include video, audio, maps, data, graphics, animation, and Flash-based media from, for example, Disney Educational Production, National Geographic Education, and BBC Motion Gallery. New Dimension also provides original material.

CCC! was selected at Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES "for the quality of content and excellent training and professional development services," according to Patricia Skelly, coordinator of school library systems.

Features of CCC! Streaming Media include:

  • Access to 3,500 programs and 50,000 teaching segments. Standards-based titles come with teachers guides, student activities, and interactive assessments;
  • The ability to search by curriculum, keyword, subject, or standard;
  • Video segment selection and video play lists, which let teachers string together segments into customized lesson plans;
  • H.264 photo quality;
  • Tools that allow for iPod playback and live webcasts;
  • The ability to share with students through emailed hyperlinks;
  • An option for teachers to add their own material to the system; and
  • Integration with digital projectors and Smart and Promethean interactive whiteboards.

In January, New Dimension Media released streaming video focused exclusively on the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It includes more than 300 standards-based STEM programs from such venues as Planet H2O, Disney (including Eyes of Nye and Bill Nye the Science Guy), PBS Nature, the National Science Foundation, and Britannica SmartMath.

Other schools nationwide that are implementing CCC! Streaming Media this week include Weyauwega-Fremont, Alma Center, and Platteville school districts in Wisconsin, and American Virtual Academy in California.

Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES, based in New Hartford, NY, serves 34,555  students enrolled in programs on the main campus, and off site.
