IBM Gives $2 Million for West Va. Internet in K-12

West Virginia has been awarded a $2 million grant from IBM for a project aimed at harnessing the Internet for public education instruction. Part of IBM's Reinventing Education Initiative, the partnership will design, test and implement a dedicated set of instructional activities centered on use of the Internet. It will establish new schedules, training and operations to enable students to acquire online skills. The program expressly targets improvement of student performance, a goal that is directly linked to West Virginia's Diploma Warranty Program. This new initiative ensures businesses and higher educational institutions that high school graduates who have received the "warranty" are prepared to enter the academic or work world. "Too often," notes Stanley Litow, IBM's Director of Corporate Support Programs, "students have used the Internet as a high-tech pen pal."
