ERIC Report Endorses Portfolios for Teachers

A new report from the Educational Resource Information Center (ERIC) Clearinghouse on Higher Education argues that colleges and universities can improve the learning process by evaluating teacher performance with portfolios.

In Successful Faculty Development and Evaluation: The Complete Teaching Portfolio, Dr. John P. Murray, assistant professor of Educational Administration at the State University of New York-Brockport, states that portfolios can document excellence in teaching, empower professors to define quality instruction in their own terms, and allow administrators to convince the public that their institution promotes faculty development.

With this information, universities can establish reward systems for teaching as well as research. The monograph is available for $18 (plus $3.75 S&H) from ASHE-ERIC Higher Education Reports, The George Washington University, One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 630, Washington, DC 20036.
