Corel Gives Dallas Computer Students a Boost

Corel Corp. has donated more than $100,000 of its Linux software to selected students in the Dallas area. The gift was announced at an event in Dallas, where approximately 250 local families received donated computers and training. The event was primarily attended by members of the Dallas Independent School District's CAST (Connect a Student to Technology) program, recently created to improve student literacy and computer proficiency. The program allows students at selected schools to take computers home. CAST provides these students connectivity to the school and the Internet for curriculum enhancement and parent-teacher e-mails.

"Our goal is to make it possible for every family in the school district to own a computer," said Dr. Waldemar Rojas, General Superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District. "We can't stress enough the importance of having the appropriate tools at home for children to succeed in the classroom and in the marketplace."

Other participators in the event included representatives from HiFusion, Inc., Excel Communications, Inc. and Sea Land Services, Inc., who also contributed equipment and services to the CAST program. Corel Corp., Ottawa, Can., www.corel.com.
