Program Aims to Bridge Digital Divide

PowerUP is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young people of all economic, ethnic, and social backgrounds learn computer skills. The program aims to help children acquire the skills, experiences and resources they need to succeed in the digital age. PowerUP institutes programs and resources designed to enhance existing community and education-based centers, and to stimulate the creation of new sites across the country where they are needed. The organization will supply its sites with Gateway computers, trained support staff, innovative programming via PowerUP Online, links with schools and educators, Internet access, healthful snacks, and community grants. PowerUP Online introduces young people to the Internet in a safe environment, and delivers pre-approved content with information about productive after-school activities, healthy lifestyles, how to find a mentor, career opportunities and community service projects.
