Within the last year, schools and businesses worldwide fell victim to viruses such as the Melissa Virus, the Happy99.exe virus, the Chernobyl virus, and the PrettyPark.exe virus. Other statistics accentuate the story: in its annual Computer Virus Prevalence Survey, the International Computer Security Association, Inc. reports an exponential increase in the rate of computer virus infections. The average rate of infection during January and February 1999 was approximately twice the rate for the same period in 1998 - which in turn was double the rate for January and February in 1997. Statistics such as these illustrate how important it is for schools to protect their investment in computers by utilizing anti-virus software such as Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus 2000.

Norton Anti-Virus 2000 is the latest version of Norton's popular anti-virus product. The user interface may have changed, but it is still very powerful protection for computers. NAV 2000 is designed to work along with the user's comfort level. For the new computer user, NAV 2000 can be automated to protect against all forms of harmful code, including viruses, Trojan horses, Java applets, and ActiveX controls so that the user can surf the Web and receive e-mail with more peace of mind. NAV 2000 settings can also be adjusted for more experienced computer users who feel comfortable performing some of the tasks manually.

I have run other anti-virus software programs in the past, but what particularly impresses me with NAV 2000 are features such as:

  • Ease of installation
  • Automatic protection and e-mail scanning
  • Customized scanning capability
  • Searchable virus library
  • Comprehensive file protection
  • Live Advisor
  • Live Updates
  • System status report

NAV 2000's installation is very simple. The installation wizard guides you through the whole process and after the computer is rebooted, your computer's protection starts automatically. As you surf on the Web and receive e-mail, NAV 2000 is working in the background to protect you from malicious viruses. The user-friendly interface allows you to choose which drives and files you want searched, as well as when you want them searched. NAV 2000 also contains a searchable virus library where you can look up information about viruses and the possible damage they can do. The comprehensive file protection allows you to scan all file types on your system for possible infection, which comes in handy when you are dealing with downloaded files or e-mail attachments. The Live Advisor, Live Update, and system report features of NAV 2000 further ensure that you are getting the utmost protection for your system by informing you of updates, technical issues, virus alerts, and scanning performance through simple point-and-click menus.

NAV 2000 costs $39 or less, depending upon whether you own a previous version of it. For all that it can do to protect your system and how easy it is to customize, that price would be money well spent by any school.
