Honeywell Inks 30-Year, $140 Million Deal with Alberta Schools

Honeywell has announced a 30-year contract with the province of Alberta, Canada, worth $140 million. Under the agreement, the company will provide total Asset Management for 18 new K-9 schools, including performance monitoring and maintenance for the buildings until 2040.

According to the announcement, the new schools will be designed and built to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification requirements, tying critical energy and security systems together with Honeywell's Enterprise Buildings Integrator (EBI) platform.

The contracted work will be part of a public-private partnership, the first of its kind for schools in Alberta. Other members of the partnership include financier Babcock & Brown, Bird Construction Co., and Graham Group Ltd.

"Through the [ public-private partnership] agreement, we leverage the expertise of partners like Honeywell to design schools with enhanced energy efficiency and greater safety, as well as ensure well-maintained facilities for decades to come," said John Gibson, project director for the government of Alberta, in prepared statement. "As a result, we're able to focus on our core mission of providing the best education possible."

According to Honeywell, Alberta expects to reduce its overall operating expense for each school through fixed-rate pricing for all monthly facility-related services. Construction is expected to conclude in June 2010, with Honeywell assuming its operational responsibilities in conjunction with start of the 2010-2011 school year.
