Video Contest Asks Students To Think About Internet Safety

Trend Micro Internet Safety for Kids and Family is again organizing a user-generated video competition for youths and classes.

The third annual What's Your Story? contest calls for individual students and teachers with their classes to create videos that answer these questions:

  • How would you help a friend being bullied online;
  • What's the right way to share online; and
  • How can someone new to cell phones use them wisely?

Contest rules include:

  • No copyrighted material is allowed;
  • Videos must be 30 seconds to 2 minutes in length. Submissions over 2 minutes will be rejected; and
  • Each participant can submit one video for each question.

The grand-prize winner will receive $10,000, and six category cash prizes will also be awarded (three to schools and three to individuals per category).

Judges include staff members from Twitter, Facebook, Cyberbullying Research Center, The Wireless Foundation, Yahoo! Safely, Office of the Privacy Commissioner (Ontario), Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, and The Identity Theft Resource Center.

"For the past few years, I have been working with a group of students to promote safe and responsible digital citizenship within our schools and community. Videos have proven to be the most effective median for engaging our audiences in meaningful conversations about the effects of their digital behaviors. It's become difficult to find new high quality videos that reinforce the online safety messages we share, so we were thrilled when we came across the Trend Micro videos," said Cari Roderick, instructional technology specialist at East Valley School District in Spokane, WA.

The contest is open to students ages 13 and up in the United States and Canada. The deadline to upload entries is April 3 and winners will be announced in early May.
