Georgia To Provide Early Intervention and Assessment Software Tools to All Schools
The Georgia Department of Education (DOE) is providing every district and school across the state with software to support early intervention and assessment in the classroom. The Georgia DOE has selected Desire2Learn Learning Suite to provide classroom teachers with specialized tools to support its Race to the Top education initiative.
The Georgia DOE already has an online data system, reporting tools, and content repository but moved to integrate Desire2Learn as the delivery mechanism for the department's content and assessment activities. According to a information released by Desire2Learn and the Georgia DOE, the goal of this initiative is to "support new approaches to early intervention and assessment that can better prepare students to succeed in college, the workplace, and the global economy."
The integrated Desire2Learn Learning Suite will be able to access the student information system (SIS) in real time, which will help ensure that teachers have access to the appropriate learning objects for each student so they can provide personalized, student-centered learning experiences.
The Georgia DOE is also using Desire2Learn for the Georgia Virtual School, as well as for its professional development program. The Georgia Virtual School uses it to create a teacher-led, virtual classroom environment for middle and high school students throughout the state. The professional development program uses the Desire2Learn ePortfolio module to track teacher accreditation.
One of the Learning Suite modules, Desire2Learn Learning Environment, is a learning management system (LMS) that includes course building capabilities, as well as reporting, assessment, and collaboration tools. The Georgia DOE will be able to customize it by user role, so it can easily add to the available tools and activities as needed.
The Georgia Department of Education oversees public education throughout the state. It serves more than 1.6 million K-12 public school students, 195 school systems, and 2,200 schools.
