New RTI System Tracks At-Risk Students Via Automated Alerts

A new Response to Intervention tool baked into the data management hub Kickboard could help educators spot various early warning signs in at-risk students through automated alerts, an effort designed to help them respond faster.

The tool, called the Early Warning Indicator System, relies on the various pieces of academic and behavioral data that Kickboard collects. Schools can then set up their own "triggers"—like failed assessments or missed classes—and teachers and administrators receive real-time notification when a student’s performance activates one of those triggers.

According to the company, the list of triggers that a school can set up "is based on industry research of indicators that predict a child’s likelihood to drop out of school."

Schools can also configure so-called "scenarios"—basically a combination of triggers, such as a set number of absences coupled with two failing classes. The system can automatically alert educators or add the student to a list for a consequence, like a phone call home, if such a scenario occurs. Conversely, the system can be used to track exemplary behavior, too, like perfect grades and attendance.
