Shmoop Launches Computer Science Courses

Shmoop, a provider of test prep and online courses, has launched two new computer science courses with more on the way.

The first pair of courses include "Computer Science" and "Introduction to HTML and CSS." Computer Science is an 18-week course for students in grades 9-12 and higher ed covering two semesters and focused on topics such as object-oriented programming, sorting algorithms, recursion, software engineering and computer ethics. "Introduction to HTML and CSS" is a three-week course for students in grades 6-12 and higher ed. Topics covered include HTML5, CSS3, the box model, color theory and the psychology of Web design style.

Other computer science courses to come will cover topics such as Java, Python, Boolean logic, Raspberry Pi, foundations of Web design, introduction to computer science principles and more.

"Going forward, it's going to be a tough slog for English majors," said David Siminoff, founder of Shmoop, in a prepared statement. "The job market will require computer science know-how, and anyone without it might just be replaced by a robot...which was engineered by the folks with the CS background."
