FIRST LEGO League Opens Robotics Team Sign-ups for Students 4–16

The FIRST LEGO League season is kicking off today. Team registration for three age divisions will be open. The season's gaming begins on Aug. 4, 2020. FIRST LEGO League is intended for students ages 4 to 16 who learn STEM-oriented problem-solving through a guided robotics program. FIRST is a nonprofit robotics community that prepares young people for college and career through team-based robotics programs that can be run in classes or as structured after-school programs.

This time around, under a theme dubbed "RePLAY," students will tackle challenges related to three themes: health, sports and fitness. Participants will use a variety of LEGO products, including: LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 (meant for two students, ages 7 and older); LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 (for two students, ages 10 and older); and SPIKE Prime (for two students, ages 10 and older).

This season of the FIRST LEGO League is introducing, what the organizations are calling a simplified program structure. The divisions are:

  • "Discover," for ages 4-6;

  • "Explore," for ages 6-10;

  • "Challenge," for ages 9-16.

The ages vary by country. Organizers said they expect to reach almost 500,000 children in more than a hundred countries with this year's program.
