OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT for Teachers
OpenAI has introduced a free version of ChatGPT for teachers, aimed at providing a secure workspace to adapt classroom materials, streamline prep, collaborate with peers, and more. The platform also provides admin controls for privacy, security, and compliance requirements.
Features include:
- Personalized teaching support that can tailor responses by grade level, curriculum, and preferred format;
- Connections to productivity tools like Canva, Google Drive, and Microsoft 365;
- Ready-to-use ideas and prompts from teachers already using ChatGPT; and
- Collaboration tools like shared projects for co-planning lessons or using custom GPTs to create templates.
Workspace data is not used to train OpenAI's models by default.
To help shape and improve ChatGPT for Teachers over time, OpenAI is working with a cohort of school districts across the country, representing 150,000 teachers and staff, to learn more about classroom needs and implementation insights.
"By working with OpenAI and empowering our teachers with innovative tools like ChatGPT for Teachers, we ensure our educators remain at the forefront of educational innovation—ready to embrace new trends and guide our students into the future," commented Dr. LaTanya D. McDade, superintendent of Virginia's Prince William County Public Schools, in a statement.
"Whether our staff are longtime ChatGPT users or just getting started, this is an exciting step forward," said Kerri Holt, chief technology officer for Houston Independent School District in Texas. "They will have access to trusted AI tools that help them save time, think bigger, and focus on what matters most: supporting our students and community."
ChatGPT will remain free for teachers through June 2027; after which OpenAI said it may adjust pricing. "Our goal is to keep ChatGPT for Teachers affordable for educators," the company said.
