Compaq and Microsoft have launched an initiative to support K-12 education with Windows-based educational software, Microsoft Windows OSs, and Compaq PCs and servers. The initiative's key programs are the Windows School Connection and the Education Application Server Evaluation Program. Other components include a toll-free education hotline (800-555-4K12); a comprehensive Education Guide comprising a directory of Windows-based K-12 software (organized by grade levels and curriculum areas), instructional materials and Compaq systems; and a national training tour. The Education Application Server Evaluation Program offers a no-risk, in-school hardware and software trial evaluation for networking environments. Participating schools receive a Compaq ProLiant server and three Compaq Deskpro PCs running the Microsoft BackOffice family of products, which includes Windows NT Server and other educational software and support tools. Free installation and technical support is provided for a 90-day trial period. After the trial educators can purchase any or all of the products at special prices or return the products at no cost. The Windows School Connection program, for educational software developers, already includes 81 leading firms. There are over 1,000 Windows-based education applications and many new Windows 95 titles are on the way. Member companies receive support for development, marketing and technical help from both Compaq and Microsoft. For online information about any of Compaq's K-12 products: http://www.compaq.com.
