HP Color Printer Sells for $199

Hewlett Packard's lowest-priced color printer to date, the HP DeskJet 400 prints 16.7 million colors at up to 300 x 300 dpi. A snap-in color cartridge interchanges with the black cartridge; a storage container that can be capped prevents cartridges from drying out when not in use. ColorSmart technology eliminates color-adjustment guesswork, ensuring vibrant color on a variety of paper stocks. Printer Toolbox software gives onscreen feedback, such as "out of paper" warnings, as well as step-by-step instructions to solve common printing problems. The DeskJet 400 (which replaces the DeskJet 600 and 600C) boasts a compact design with a folding paper tray. The tray holds 50 sheets for automatic feeding, while a manual feed path lets one insert labels, postcards and envelopes. HP Resolution Enhancement technology ensures crisp black printing at up to 3 ppm at 600 x 300 dpi. Priced at $199, the unit puts color printing within reach of classrooms and small administrative offices. The DeskJet 400 d'es Windows 95 Plug-and-Play and is compatible with Windows 3.x.
