Study Reports on Basic Skills SW

The League for Innovation in the Community College announced the final results of Project LEAP, a two-year research study to determine the effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction in developmental education. The study documents impressive retention rates in all of the participating colleges and a variety of instructional models other colleges can use to improve their own programs. Invest Learning co-sponsored the study, which focused on academic performance in reading, writing, math and ESL. The firm worked with nine colleges to plan the project, design the curriculum and install the labs. Colleges then collected student and faculty data throughout the 1994-95 school year. Participants used INVEST In the Future, comprehensive basic skills courseware, in different settings and implementation models. At Kingwood College, for example, students worked on their own in the INVEST lab, without teachers or tutors, to meet the TASP non-course-based remediation requirements.
