Ariz. District Installs Network in Phases
The Sunnyside Unified School District in Tucson, Ariz., has implemented a multimedia network that provides nearly 15,000 students in 17 schools with access to Microsoft Office applications, CD-ROM titles and the Internet.
Sunnysideís district-wide network is standardized on 3Comís SuperStack LinkSwitch 1000 Ethernet switches, LinkBuilder FMS II managed hubs and a NETBuilder II router at the main office.
In 1995, Learning Resource Centers (LRCs) in all 17 libraries were each equipped with up to seven Dell Optiplex 575 workstations. These connect to a 3Com LinkSwitch 1000, providing dedicated 10MB Ethernet connectivity from the desktop. The LinkSwitch also maintains a 100MB fast Ethernet link to a 1GB Dell Pentium 90 server attached to six-speed Plextor CD-ROM drives.
Phase One also included a 2MB spread spectrum radio WAN connecting all school servers, the main officeís NETBuilder II, FMS II hubs, and a training site for teachers. In Phase Two, Sunnyside installed more PCs and workstations in classrooms and added new LinkSwitches to handle increased network traffic.
During Phase Three, now underway and slated for completion in 1998, the district will replace older mainframe programs with Microsoft SQL-based client/server applications. 3Com Corp., Santa Clara, CA, (800) NET-3COM, www.3com.com.
