Sun Creates Forum on Technical Computing

Sun Microsystems is forming a High Performance Computing (HPC) consortium that will tap into the knowledge of technical computing leaders around the world. Members of the consortium would enjoy early access to Sun technologies, where appropriate, and collaborate on the future direction of high-performance computing.

Some of the computing facilities considering membership in the HPC consortium are located at Syracuse University, UC Berkeley, MIT, University of Tokyo and University of Cologne in Germany. Sunís vice president/chief technology officer plans to host two meetings per year where members will share ideas.

The firm also intends to establish an HPC Web site, where users can download public domain tools, libraries and applications suitable for research in the fields of computational fluid dynamics, chemistry, biotechnology, computer science and large-scale simulations data analysis.
