Workforce Academy Opens Its Doors in Ky.

This summer, the Workforce Skills Academy in Louisville, Ky., opened its doors and began training low-income people to improve their employment prospects. Funding for the academy, set at $1.5 million, came from the federal Enterprise Zone and Enterprise Community initiatives.

"The Workforce Skills Academy is designed to help residents bring their skill level up to the point where they are qualified to hold a job that pays a living wage, such as a manufacturing job," said Jerry Abramson, mayor of Louisville.

A main ingredient in the academy is instructional software from Invest Learning, a unit of Simon & Schuster. The courseware, tailored to the unique learning styles of adolescents and adults, provides activities encompassing life skills training, career interest identification and more.

The Workforce Skills Academy was modeled after the Focus Hope Fast Track program in Detroit, Mich., which also utilizes Invest Learning products. Invest Learning, San Diego, CA, (800) 452-9443, www.investlearning.com.
