Business Leaders Gather For School-To-Work Summit

Education and business leaders from across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom recently gathered in Chicago for the third annual International School-To-Work (STW) Summit, sponsored by TRO Learning. CEOs, superintendents, college presidents and others shared success stories about their community-based school-to-work models.

James D. Burge, a retired Motorola corporate vice president, urged attendees to support the National Skills Standards Board: "Skill standards provide clear and measurable productivity and performance targets. They are an invaluable communications tool that lets everyone -- employees, applicants, employers, educators and trainers -- know what is needed for high-skill, high-wage work."

Break-out sessions featured presentations by Jim Murphy, educational relations manager of The B'eing Co.; Dr. Gerry House, superintendent of Memphis City Schools; and Nancy Duncan, executive director of the School-To-Work Alliance at the Bend-LaPine School District, to name a few. The two-day conference concluded with an exhibit of PLATO Learning System, which delivers academic and applied skills courseware via networks, CD-ROM, the Internet and intranets.
