A Guidebook on Education Technology and the Law

A new publication by the National School Boards Association (NSBA) will help school leaders understand and follow laws relating to the use of technology in schools. Legal Issues & Education Technology: A School Leader's Guide, written by leading members of NSBA's Council of School Attorneys in collaboration with Technology Leadership Network, encourages school districts to implement acceptable use policies for applying school technology.

In plain language, the book presents key issues such as Internet filtering, copyright and fair use, privacy rights, freedom of expression, and peripheral questions such as open-meeting 'sunshine' laws for school boards, attorney/client privilege, sexual harassment, Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and Year 2000 computer preparedness. There is also a glossary of technology terms and a list of Web sites for updated guidance and policy samples. Legal Issues & Education Technology (softcover, 96 pages) costs $35.
