DESCRIPTION: (1) The Education Commission of the States (ECS) has received support from the Ford Foundation to help enhance student citizenship skills. A final report will be released in May 2000. (2) ECS also received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to launch The Center for Community Center Policy, which will identify, collect, develop and disseminate information on effective college policies and practices. (3) The DeWitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund has made it possible for ECS to support a three-year national initiative, Focusing State Policy on High Quality Teachers for Hard-to-Staff Schools. ECS will work with governors, legislators and other key policymakers and educators to address the growing need to prepare a diverse pool of high-quality teachers.
