NSTA Initiative Provides Missing Link to Web Sites and Science Textbooks

SciLINKS, a new initiative set forth by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) that links science textbooks to the Internet, was selected for demonstration at the National Education Summit. Chosen from over 150 applicants, sciLINKS is one of 30 projects that will be demonstrated in the Virtual Classroom. The Virtual Classroom features innovative educational technology programs, prototypes and products that work to improve student achievement and assist teachers in acquiring new knowledge and skills.

Launched in March, the program links relevant, age-appropriate Web sites to the pages of science textbooks. NSTA places sciLINKS icons and codes in textbook margins at key subject areas. By accessing the program Web site and entering a code, students and teachers are guided to selected sites that support particular science subjects introduced in the text. Science educators choose all of the sciLINKS sites and the service is free to all teachers and students. To learn more about this initiative, visit www.scilinks.org.
