New Initiatives Make Computerized Assessment Easier

PLATO Learning, Inc. recently announced the launch of the PLATO Web Learning Network, which makes on-demand delivery of the PLATO curriculum as an ASP possible. Designed to support both school and district-wide implementations, the PLATO Web Learning Network gives administrators the necessary leverage to share PLATO resources across a number of classrooms, school buildings, programs and homes. The Network links directly to the PLATO Simulated Test System to offer schools comprehensive skill diagnostics, assessment, instruction and reporting services. Available to schools on an annual workstation subscription basis, the service lets educators select a variety of platforms in which to use PLATO courseware, such as CD-ROM, LAN, WAN, Internet and Intranet.

PLATO and ETS Technologies, Inc. have also agreed to include ETS' patented e-rater scoring technology as part of PLATO's Simulated Test System. Both companies plan to work together to develop custom essay tests and e-rater scoring models based on state-specific standards. The e-rater technology allows computers to score freeform essays reliably, and to provide instant feedback. The essay tests will be offered in the writing segment of the PLATO Simulated Test System.
